Single Audits for schools

Single Audits for private schools and education nonprofits spending $1M+ in federal awards

Greywood CPA performs Single Audits for private schools, education nonprofits and training organizations that spend $1,000,000 or more in federal awards in a fiscal year. We are a licensed CPA firm (Virginia Board of Accountancy firm license #134961) working nationwide, at a fixed fee.

The $1,000,000 threshold applies to fiscal years beginning on or after October 1, 2024, and includes federal money received directly and money passed through a state agency or another organization. The reporting package is due to the Federal Audit Clearinghouse within 30 days after you receive the auditor's reports or 9 months after year-end, whichever is earlier.

Does your school need a Single Audit?

Total every federal dollar your school or organization spent in the fiscal year, from every source. At $1,000,000 or more, you need a Single Audit for that year.

  • Count spending, not awards. A multi-year grant counts only for what you spent this year.
  • Pass-through money counts. Federal funds a state education or agriculture agency passes to you are federal awards.
  • Check every program. Food service, workforce, after-school and service grants can add up.

Federal programs schools and education nonprofits often receive

ProgramTypical recipients
Child nutrition programs (school lunch and breakfast) passed through the statePrivate schools with food service programs
Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) grantsTraining and workforce development nonprofits
AmeriCorps and national service grantsTutoring, mentoring and education service nonprofits
Other federal education and youth grantsAfter-school, literacy and youth development nonprofits

Each program's rules are set in the annual federal Compliance Supplement, which decides what we test.

What a school Single Audit tests

For each major program, we test the compliance requirements that apply. In education programs, findings most often come from:

  • Eligibility, such as free and reduced-price meal applications and participant eligibility for workforce programs
  • Allowable costs, including how shared staff and space are charged to grants
  • Reporting, meaning claims and federal reports that tie to your records
  • Procurement for food service and other purchases
  • Period of performance, with costs charged to the right grant year

We also report on internal control over compliance and audit your financial statements under Government Auditing Standards.

How major programs are selected

Programs with $1,000,000 or more in expenditures are Type A for organizations spending up to $34 million in federal awards, and are the main candidates for in-depth testing. Smaller Type B programs are selected based on risk. Organizations with two clean years in a row can qualify as low-risk auditees, which reduces how much is tested.

Filing with the Federal Audit Clearinghouse

The reporting package includes your financial statements, the schedule of expenditures of federal awards (SEFA), the auditor's reports, findings and your corrective action plan. It is submitted to the Federal Audit Clearinghouse with a data collection form. We help you prepare the SEFA and support the submission.
