How CPA Mobility Works?
Why a licensed CPA firm can serve clients in other states.
CPA mobility is the system that lets licensed CPAs and CPA firms serve clients across state lines without holding a separate license in every state. It's based on the Uniform Accountancy Act, a model law developed by the AICPA and the National Association of State Boards of Accountancy (NASBA), which nearly every state has adopted in some form. In exchange for this privilege, CPAs agree to follow the rules of the state where the client is located and to be subject to that state's board of accountancy.
Individual mobility. A CPA licensed in good standing in their home state can generally provide tax, accounting and advisory services to clients in other states without obtaining an additional license. This is how our CPAs serve businesses, nonprofits and associations nationwide.

Firm mobility and attest services. The rules are stricter for audits, reviews and examinations. Some states allow out-of-state firms to perform this work under firm mobility, provided the firm is licensed in its home state and meets peer review and ownership requirements. Other states require the firm to register or obtain a permit first. Before accepting any attest engagement outside our home state, we confirm that state's requirements and comply with them. State-by-state rules are published by the AICPA and NASBA at cpamobility.org.
